My pleasures in life are not the same as everyone else's...

...but I'm sure quite a few people I know could say that as well. It just comes up during weird times, depending on what one happens to be doing.

I wish I could chunder up my emotions sometimes, like other blogs written by drug addicts and stuff. Or hell, even a tumblr like Chloe, but I don't think pictures can express what I feel..... or 1001 words, not gonna happen. It's just... different. I need systematicness, I need logical progression... that's what makes me who I am, and I can't change that! Besides, I'm not too comfortable with my inner workings being public domain.

Whoops, too late :D

But seriously, I want to tell people what I feel about them, whether I love them or hate them or anything in between. I'm actually a pretty troubled soul, if you haven't noticed... I'm not like super depressive, but sometimes I feel like I lack a means to truly express myself. But I don't want it public domain, this blog isn't it. I just feel like I'm limited by the system... I'M NOT A PART OF THE SYSTEM!!!!!!! Which is why Lonely Island's "Threw It On The Ground" is one of my favourite songs right now... hehe

:) I couldn't help smiling as I walked into English 15 minutes late because we'd been held up at the music school. ie, we were having lots of fun composing on the computers, engrossing even the teachers. I'm getting some awesome awesome stereotypical jazz thing together for a project which I doubt I will get to complete, but that don't matter here, it's all about the fun! I still need to figure out how to make dubstep on Logic though... But yeah, music students are actually insane. Like, we always just say we are, but we actually are. That's the way it is; we have our own building. Full of really expensive shizzaz. Which can actually run completely independently of the rest of the school. Feth yeah.

Today was the whackest chapel service evar! Apparently we're celebrating 150 years of Bishops Rugby. lol. So we got some okes to come speak in chapel, one who was apparently the headboy or something four years ago, very afrikaans accent, very very traditional "yah okes rugby is sick" speech... o.O No wonder people go out of this school not knowing how to speak, and what to speak about. Because if you haven't been to a Public Speaking Society meeting, or gone to Nationals, or even watched a freaking debate (as you should because you go to a prestigious private school which offers an ALL-ROUND education), you'd know a little bit about what a good speech is, because, BREAKING NEWS, that wasn't one. Us at the back of the chapel (ie all the musical choir people) severely unimpressed. Although I did get a chance to play percussion again!

I'm sure I've ranted like this before, but I don't like the whole "rugby is everything" culture here. It's a sport, yes. It's a very popular sport, yes. We've got okes who get colours for it, well done to them. It's not the reason we go to school though. We go to school to learn, yes, if we managed to succeed in rugby/hockey/fencing that's all the better. I dunno, I rate the whole "1st team players must have a minimum average of x" thing is a good idea... And I didn't suggest it, don't crap on me!

Meh, I played a Romantic Grieg at the Eisteddfod on Tuesday, and apparently "it's not a battlefield". o.O So I managed to fail completely :( But I did almost get a diploma for my Baroque piece. Which was nice, because I have put a lot of effort into both.

Fencing this weekend, super duper national tournament coming up... I have a sabre title to defend and damn I am going to defend it! I now have new gear, which should make me more confident in my abilities :D Yeah yeah, whatever, actually all this means is that I won't be able to blame my weapons... :P

LOTS OF STUFF TO DO!!! But none can be done in this class... And most of them involve a piano and/or a drum kit. Or fencing. Or composing. Or anything!

I see what people mean about school being boring. But I have to accept it, because it's the gateway to anything and everything exciting! So I'm here for now...

  2. I am flippen disgusted that you don’t appreciate or school and past head boys who you should have respect for!!

  3. The above arugument is quite and irrational one with rather one sided views. 1st off. nick koster was an amazing headboy with alot of talent. he did very well at school in both acadmemics and sport. Sorry his standard of speaking (in his 2nd lanuage) wasnt up to your standard but it never is, is it. He spoke from the heart and showed the passion that he had for this school, something u will never understand. 2nd of all is not about the "whole rugby vibe" it is about supporting something that your school is very passionate about and on which so much of your countries and schools traditions and history is set on. Your just disappointed that not alot of people watch fencing or debating but the thing is, those arent really spectator events and something which is rather boring . 3rd Bishops does off a all-rounded education and is known for the diversity it produces (Nick Koster). So basically u are an arrogant prick who thinks he is better than everyone else and acts as a high class aristocat, thinking that u know what society should conform to.
Now if you dont like what Bishops has to offer...get out of our school!!!

  4. Sam I really think that you need to think a little about what you say before you say stuff, sure it's your opinion and you're entitled to have it, at the same time it's not okay to just dismiss something that is so important to others as stupid or not worth the time. Bishops is a school of strong rugby tradition, don't ask it to be more than what it is. In fact this type of attitude only serves to alienate others from those more fringe activities that ones such as yourself enjoy. I saddens me that as someone who obviously has a lot going for him you can be, at times, just as closed minded and thoughtless as those jocks that you despises. I implore you just think more carefully about your opinions before you put them into cyberspace.

  5. well done Sam for stirring up such a controversy!
I suspect it was your goal. I didn't realize so many people who are not your greatest fans read your blog (not very carefully judging from the comments!). Quite an achievement!
now for the people who commented:
    - it is a real pity that a great school such as Bishops (which I see many of you treat as your own backyard) can not teach you not to be rude and demeaning in your speech/writing.
    - I haven't noticed Sam being disrespectful or not appreciating his school or previous/current head boys. he expressed his opinions. wasn't rude or aggressive like you.
    - I think Sam likes what Bishops offers especially the 'diversity' and he definitely loves the acceptance it offers to everyone who is there: rugby player or not.
    - Bishops is as much Sam's school as it is yours anonymous 4 or anyone else who goes there for that matter. it's not up to you to command him out
    - I seriously doubt that there is not a person who calls you 'a prick'(anonymous 4) or you 'a faggot' (anonymous 3). does it mean you are one?
    - does everybody like you anonymous 3? I don't. and there are people who like Sam I can assure you of that.
    - as for achievements: I think Sam has achieved a lot (already) and knowing him he is still rolling! so be careful with your statements in this regard.
    - accusing Sam of not being passionate or not being able to speak from the heart or not understanding it is just sick. I hope that you can be at least half as passionate about something as he is about many, many things he cares about. check his earlier posts in regard to rugby at Bishops - appreciation and support!

And the last comment: don't push the rugby thingy on too much it might have the opposite effect!

keep on reading my friends! you can see things from a different perspective! and don't forget 'the diversity' Bishops offers and 'all-roundness' we all strive for and appreciate.

  6. Oooops, I think you just stuck your hand in a hornet's nest. So many strong feelings...

Oh rugby, rugby. If it's such a great game it will defend itself and there is no need to worry about Sam's views.

    I like your posts.

  8. wow.. Sam's opinion wasn't particularly sensitive, but it was by no means offensive. Unlike comments of a bunch of you who didn't even have balls to sign them with your own names... shame on you. It's easy to throw expletives being anonymous... Sam can speak, cannot play rugby. Nick can play rugby, but cannot speak (or so Sam says). Notice that Sam does not criticize Nick's rugby skills. He does not say that rugby sucks. He says the fact that rugby folk do not expose themselves to "alternative" activities the school offers, does not project well on their all-roundness. And with this, he is probably showing more care about school than many of you. As far as achievement goes, we will wait and see... wanna bet, anonymous? .... and yeah, I'm Sam's dad

    ReplyDelete
  9. Just to clarify: I like Sam's posts not the abusive comments. I think it is quite something not to conform to the rugby culture (or anything else) just because everyone else does.

And, honestly, can't you anonymous (I think it's always the same person) do any better than swear and tell him 'no one likes you, leave'. It's like you are taking us back to the sand pit with kids who can't do anything else. what about constructive criticism? or you just hope maxim 'vox populi vox dei' will work? wait a minute, you won't know what I'm talking about. will you?

    ReplyDelete
  10. now i.k.slow. You dop raise interesting points and Sam probaly does care about the school more than we know but for him to criticise previous Bishops scholars (and one of the well-known people Bishops has produced) is ridiculous.Sam judged him on a his appearance just becasue he was a big guy that was a professional rugby player. He is a well-known christian too which shows that he is all-rounded and shows why he was elected headboy. I dont except you to understand because it seems as if you werent a previous Bishops student. You must not just look at the situation from what sam has told you or your perspective, but rather look at it from the many boys perspective that have past through Bishops.

Also well Sam thinks that society is only concerent with sports achievers he is rather just trying to look for recognition in terms of his academics and music that he has done at the school and yes well done to him. It does not mean that he must publicly look for recognition or publicly humilate himself or the school. Also at Bishops you dont just get your nerds and jocks. You get alot of people that are in between and that take control of the diversity that Bishops has to offer. Also if Sam knew about the rugby tradition at Bishops, and knew that he didnt like rugby why did he not apply for a school more focussed on academics, such as Westerford. So maybe you shouldnt judge us on what u have heard from Sam but rather look at what he has done through someone elses eyes.

  11. Just for the record, Nick Koster is the only speaker I know of who can speak in a relative monotone and with his accent and hold an audience at attention. He spoke beautifully with a passion, integrity and humility that is indicative of the values of a bishops upbringing, and if you ask most of the 800+ witnesses that day (including the more "intellectual" boys and staff) they will tell you that that speech was one of the most stunning they had heard in the Bishops Chapel.

Nick Koster is a bishops hero, a man not only legendary on the rugby field, but one of endless compassion and empathy for others amongst his many other virtues, too numerous to name. He was an inspiration and a man not afraid to get up and speak in front of a crowd, something which not very many people can do. His speech was beautiful because he spoke about a great love and pride in a school and in a sport.

I strongly believe that sam's comments about Nick were insensitive because his opinion on his subject matter and delivery were going to be biased from the beginning. they show an inability to see the beauty in tradition and fellowship and brotherhood that has defined bishops for a century and a half. they show a stark refusal to look at a speaker objectively and judge him on his message rather than one's predisposed opinion of rugby.

Sam, if anything you should be ashamed that you jumped to conclusions about one of the more virtuous men to ever have passed through this great school

  12. thanks to the two last anonymous guys. atmosphere is more breathable now... no more expletives, but hard core reasoning... I leave it to Sam to defend himself. Hope he will not have to use his sabre to do so, for use it he can;-))

  14. Sam made an opinion I guess it just wasn't the best opinion to make it in the 150th year of Bishops rugby as well as In the derby week of Bishops vs Bosch! Everyone just think about it for a couple of seconds, Bishops is an anglican school and I will speak on the behalf of sam they make a chapel service not on God or jesus or they dont even take a reading from the bible but instead they have one on rugby !! Nick didnt speak amzingly as well as Sam didnt know who he was or he didn't know that it was his second language because rugby isnt his thing but at the same time I am sure you guys wouldn't know who Atkins is, because you don't follow fencing but if you did you would know he is one place off from making it into S.A senior fencing team. Dont say no onecares about fencing because believe it or not bishops as a whole do it's one of the sports you can take.Last time I checked everyone in our school supports Bishops. As well as if you guys take the time to get know same you would know that he is not gay because he has a Girlfriend!! And to anyone who say's Sam should leave the school I think you should see what he has achieved in his short but impressive time at bishops and what you have done with yours at your time at Bishops.
Sam although I have backed you up I still think you should publicly apologise to Bishops as we are A Rugby school thats how its always been and thats how it will always be!! Sam all I can say to you next time is : think before you do something ! :)

Hehe, okes are taking this way too seriously. But in all honesty nobody does care about the less mainstream sports at bishops. That's the way it is, and the way it always will be. Meh. On another note, if you're going to start hating on Sam or anyone else, grow some balls and put your name to it.

  18. The whole "We shall kill Sam for blaspheming against the 1st team" is quite the stereotype of rugby players (violent/big/strong/might makes right attitude/I can solve my problems with my fists) you Bishops men should be above senseless violence

  25. Sam, I certainly don't blame half the school for hurling insults at you after that offensive and destructive post. You may have heard of Chris Lester (matric 2008) who was shut off from the rest of the school after he put together a certain powerpoint. At least in his case, it was personal; you did this as a purely attention-seeking venture. The fact that you, as a Bishops boy, stooped this low to get attention is disgraceful.
Don't publicly apologise, publicly blog in reaction, or anything public at all. Just hang your head and stop desperately drawing attention to yourself.

  26. You people are ignorant fools. The language and weak, narrow minded views that I have witnessed on this website are appalling. You need to ask yourselves if this is what Bishops men are all about. You are the stereotypical people I'd expect to express your views, discriminating against others. If this blog was said to be that offensive, why did you go ahead and read it, I mean really, this is absolutely pathetic. He is allowed to express his opinions, why you ask? It's his blog. Go back to your parents to find some love because you are bitter and angry and want to make others miserable because you are. I am absolutely disappointed in this 'fine-establishment' and shall not suffer a fool to live. I was considering sending my children to this school, but now, I can't even stand to hear the words Bishops without feeling sick.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The tradition , honour and respect rugby brings to this school is a major reason why Bishops is the great school it is.So you complain about the rugby importance here but if it weren't like that you would not be able to attend a school as great as this .

    ReplyDelete
  28. Although the language used in the comments is weak it cannot be argues against that his comments have brought the school into disgrace and also the school rules state that a pupil may not disrespect the school and this has clearly been done. I also find it disappointing how he can say that men come out of the school not being able to speak English when he says things such as, "evar" and "lol". Insulting Nick Koster also crossed the line by a country mile. Disgraceful stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Okay, I've had enough of this.

The only people who have brought the school into disgrace are the people who have commented on my blog and those who caused this uproar in the first place. Read my post again, and thoroughly this time. You might see what I'm ACTUALLY talking about, not what the cheerleaders told you.

Also, my blog is an informal setting. I reserve the right to use whatever kind of language I want, but when it comes to anything in a more formal setting, I slay like a boss.

Go constructive or go home. You are only further desecrating your school's name.

  30. It is truly fascinating to see the extent to which boys are taking this. Boys clearly have no understanding of what Bishops was founded for. The blue book - of which the school rules form part - clearly states that Bishops was founded "with the object of supplying a liberal education with religious instruction in accordance with the principles of the Church of England", such that boys would learn to at least respect both the church (no matter what religious denomination) as well as each other for who we are (this, by the way, is also indicated clearly). Another such rule is to "... not bring DISCREDIT to the school..." yet nearly every boy does this by their sloppy dress and poor manners!
Anonymous from 30/8 (11:52): you may also wish to know that rugby has brought none of that to Bishops, which is clearly a school that is falling relatively quickly based on the outbursts to this blog. Tradition is a word that is used simply when boys are too scared to take accountability for their actions. Tradition is something that is not only falling away because of staff, but more so because of boys. The disrespect they have for the traditions and culture of Bishops shows this very well.
For those of you who commented: learn some common courtesy! You have simply shown a complete lack of class for the Bishops name and if you regard Sam as bringing it down, consider your responses too. Until you learn what respect is, you cannot call yourself a Bishops man, let alone a Bishops boy. Yes, fine, we're meant to be proud of Bishops, but defending it with that severity is pointless. Also, the standard of cheerleading and cheering has dropped significantly to such a low that boys feel obliged to swear in cheers - truly catastrophic. If you want to make Bishops an institution that boys can be proud of, get the basics right first and ensure that we work on improving the understanding of Bishops. To get an all-round education, maybe we do need to go and try and understand fencing, or public speaking; in other words get to know a little about everything! And, to each their own - Sam didn't like Koster's speech and that's his opinion. Let's just get used to the fact that some guys are inspired by other things. Not everybody has to like Koster's speech!
Anonymous from 26/8 (14:18): This is exactly the problem - rugby is regarded as the biggest thing at Bishops, yet we are a school. Last time I checked, a school was about learning, not rugby. Just because rugby is 150 does not give it right to rule over all things. So too, 1st XV rugby players need to learn that they are not above the rules and cannot do as they so please. Until we are regarded as equal, we cannot move forward. Learn to act responsibly or give somebody else the chance to experience the opportunity of Bishops.

  31. Can someone, for God's sake, point to me how (the exact words which Sam used) this post is disrespectful or offensive? and which of his words 'bring the school into disgrace'?
Not your ranting (about tradition or Bishops boys) or what meaning you put into them but his words!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Are you familiar with the term 'licentia poetica'? It gives Sam right to use 'evar', 'lol', 'meh' etc. I hope it's part of your syllabus (it should be - Bishops is a college after all) so pay attention it may come in handy one day.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Someone writes that Sam's post is 'purely attention-seeking venture' and that he is 'desperately drawing attention to himself'. Until last Friday his blog was little known (I bet you and many of your friends haven't read any of his posts before) and there is someone else who deserves the questionable glory of making it so popular. Sam absolutely didn't ask for it. But more about it in due time.

But let's not turn this, already battered and tired forum into a shouting match, let's not dignify stupid comments of shallow, mindless kids with our replies. We are not going to change anything by arguing with them here, particularly not by going down to their level. We cannot be offended any more than we already are, and should they want to show off their ignorance, lack of any culture and lack of any substance of their argument - let them do it. I hope Sam will not close this site for anonymous comments, nor delete them, and so this discussion will stay until the end of internet for anyone to see and to bear witness to ailments of Bishops and... well.. humanity in 2011
